'MIDSUMMER MUSINGS AND ‘BATS IN THE BELFRY’

As I am writing this, we are coming up to the longest day i.e. 21st June and Midsummer’s Day; the lambs are growing very quickly – as are the rabbits in the churchyard (no flowers are safe at the moment!). When I was having my breakfast the other morning, there was a family of baby squirrels playing on the lawn and having, what can only be described as, a ‘mad half hour’. They were rolling on their backs and then suddenly rushing up the nearest tree, or chasing each other and then pouncing and ending up in a heap of fur and bushy tails. What fun they were having! If you have been watching Spring Watch on the television and looking at the antics of the stoats, you will know what I mean.

Ian Godson and I have been doing our bit of nature watching too, when we joined the local Bat Group in St. Edmund’s Churchyard at 9 o’clock one evening, to do a bat survey. They first checked inside the church, but as we thought, they didn’t find anything, then they went up the tower where they found a few old bat droppings but nothing new, so they came to the conclusion that there were no resident bats. As it got darker it became more interesting and they produced their bat tracking devices and we could hear the different clicks and noises made by the various types of bat. It was very interesting and it made us realise how clever these bats are with their sonar location. They have promised us a copy of their report – so watch this space.
Isn’t God’s World wonderful? We are so lucky in this country- God has given us so many marvellous animals, trees, flowers and birds – not to mention the wonderful scenery. If you can, this summer go out and look and listen to God’s amazing creation and thank Him for it.

Have a lovely peaceful and restful summer. Love Angela
